Draft or salary cap: which AFL fantasy league should you start?

The four ways to play AFL fantasy on Fantasy Zone, and which one suits your group of mates.

Starting an AFL fantasy league for summer? The first question is what kind. Fantasy Zone has four, and they suit different groups.

Draft league - best for most groups

You and your mates hold a live snake draft: one pick each, then back the other way. Every player belongs to just one team, so if your mate takes Nick Daicos, nobody else can have him. During the season you pick up free agents, put in waiver claims and trade with each other. Every round is head-to-head, with a ladder and finals.

Choose it if: you want rivalry, trash talk and a draft night everyone turns up for. There's a pick timer and auto-pick, so the draft never stalls.

Salary cap - best for big or casual groups

Everyone picks from every player within a budget, so two teams can both have Daicos. Prices rise and fall with form each round, and you get a set number of trades each round and across the season. It's the classic-style game, with a full squad and a flex spot.

Choose it if: your group is large, people join at different times, or some mates want to set and forget. No draft night needed.

AFL Clubs auction - best for footy tragics

A play-money auction where each team buys a whole real AFL club and gets its real list. Leftover money becomes a trade budget. It's the most "front office" way to play - see how an AFL Clubs auction works.

Choose it if: you've got up to 18 committed mates who love list management.

Dynasty - best for the long haul

Keep your list season after season, like a real club. Lists are 38 players, with one big startup draft, then a mid-season draft, a trade period, delistings and a rookie draft each year. You can even include the top 100 AFL Draft prospects and stash a future star before he's played a game.

Choose it if: your group plays together every year and wants it to matter long term.

What every league has

Still not sure?

Go with a draft league. It's the easiest to explain, it creates the best rivalries, and draft night is a great excuse to get everyone together. Choose 🏉 AFL when you create a league to get started.
